THE IMAGINARY LANDSCAPE

It is born from a memory: A winter walk along the shore of a lake in Ardèche blanketed in a thick layer of snow. An opening in the forest, almost a secret clearing—a place that is at once intimate, protective, and loving, in the way that nature alone knows how. It was from this feeling that the painting took shape, step by step, guided by intuition.

For the first time, reading became intertwined with my creative process. Anni Kytömäki’s novel Kultarinta accompanied the painting’s development, almost without my realizing it. It blended with my senses—touch and sight—which are my primary sources of inspiration.

But the story of this little girl and her father—who lived through the turn of the century and the Finnish Civil War, always finding refuge in the wild forest whose trees were being cut down for industry—touched me deeply throughout those weeks of slow maturation. The Imaginary Landscape has gained an unexpected depth, as if painting and literature were engaged in a silent dialogue.
